RAC Business

Site development

Objective

Build a responsive website for a nationwide vehicle repair and recovery brand, to help promote their range of products and services.

Approach

The front end build of this project was developed using a pattern library approach, whereby designs of the site were broken down into user interface elements and built as discreet components. The modular approach helped ensure consistency between different parts of the site, with the library of components acting as reference for the team of developers to refer to. It also helped make each component re-usable and testable, improving the efficiency of the build and helping to deliver a more cost effective end-product to the client.

Each pattern library component was integrated into an Umbraco content management system, where close collaboration was required with the front end and back end development teams. A custom grid editor was built within Umbraco, enabling the client to create custom layouts of different pattern library modules, giving them maximum flexibility over how to surface their content on the site.

Challenges

The flexibility of the system required careful planning and execution. Each pattern library module that was integrated into the grid editor needed to be thoroughly tested in different custom grid layouts to ensure the system could cater for the wide range of different content scenarios.

Output

A clean, modular, responsive website to help drive traffic towards the brand's key products and services. With a customisable content management system, the RAC team have a dynamic application that can flex and shift to continue to meet their needs as the business' objectives and content evolve.
